A quiet storm is brewing within the political corridors after revelations emerged that Charles Nyachae, once the top pick to lead the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission was unceremoniously dropped in what sources now describe as a high-stakes political gamble by President William Ruto ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to insider reports, Nyachae was the unanimous top choice by the IEBC selection panel.
“He was vetted, ranked highest, and was the panel’s clear favorite to restore public trust in the commission,” a source close to the process disclosed to Kurunzi News.

However, in a sudden turn of events, the name of Erastus Edung Ethekon was forwarded instead. The change, sources claim, was influenced by fears within Ruto’s inner circle that Nyachae’s independence and potential links to former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i could jeopardize any clandestine plans to manipulate the 2027 vote.

“Ruto feared Nyachae wouldn’t play ball. His alliance with Matiang’i and growing Kisii support made the President uncomfortable,” said a political analyst familiar with the developments.

“Replacing him with Ethekon, a relatively unknown figure was a calculated move to ensure control.”
One senior government official, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed: “The President’s team believes Ethekon is easier to manage. Boss (the nominating figure) made the switch after Matiang’i’s homecoming tour showed the Kisii community was politically reawakening. That spooked the State House.”

Fred Matiang’i’s re-entry into politics appears to have sent shockwaves through the administration, especially after his triumphant return rally in Kisii County, where thousands turned out in a show of force.

“This government is afraid of the Kisii wave,” said ODM legislator Anthony Kibagendi. “Ruto knows Matiang’i plus Nyachae at IEBC is a nightmare.”
In response to the brewing controversy, a top opposition strategist said, “Whether he appoints Rachel or Nick Ruto to IEBC, Kenyans are ready. We will still defeat him.”

Ruto’s allies have remained tight-lipped, but one UDA insider defended the move: “Let’s be honest Nyachae is his own man. That independence may be admirable, but it’s politically risky. The President needs someone he can work with, not someone who might go rogue.”

Analysts now say the appointment could either consolidate power for Ruto or backfire spectacularly.
“It’s a bold move—perhaps too bold,” said Prof. Gitile Naituli, a governance expert. “Undermining a transparent selection process could erode public trust further.”

As the 2027 race slowly begins to take shape, this latest twist signals the high stakes at play—and the lengths to which some will go to secure victory. The question now remains: was sidelining Nyachae a masterstroke or a costly miscalculation?
