The much-awaited tournament will take place at the Mombasa Sports Club in Mombasa from July 8 and 9, 2023.
Circuit leaders KCB who are fresh from winning the just concluded Dala Sevens in Kisumu are the topmost seed and headline Division 1’s Pool A which also has Nakuru RFC, Nondescripts RFC, and Varsity side Blak Blad.
Pool B has Kenya Cup defending champions Kabras Sugar who fell to KCB in last weekend’s Dala 7s final in Kisumu. The Sugarmen will be up against Homeboyz RFC, Kisumu RFC, and hosts Mombasa RFC.
Varsity side Strathmore Leos who are fresh from scooping the third-place finish at the Dala 7s are in Pool C, alongside reigning circuit champions Menengai Oilers, Catholic Monks, and Masinde Muliro.
Ngong road-based side Kenya Harlequin headlines Pool D which also comprises defending Driftwood champions Mwamba RFC, Varsity sides Daystar Falcons and Kabarak University who won the division two competition in Kisumu hence earning the promotion tag to the top tier.
The tournament order play as well as division two pools will be released in subsequent communication according to the Kenya Rugby Union.
Meanwhile, KCB RFC tactician Andrew Amonde believes his side has more to offer in the coming circuits despite his side clinching the just concluded Dala Sevens.
The former Shujaa captain said the win was a major boost to his side heading to the Driftwood Sevens and is full of positive expectations from the team in the other legs of the National Sevens Circuit (NSC).
“The win in Kisumu was a big boost for us and for our morale. We will just keep on working, taking it one game at a time when we go to Mombasa. We still have a few players we haven’t tested so we are going to also give them a chance to come in. It is still a learning process for us to see if we can conquer everything,” Amonde said.
The bankers began their quest for a fourth NSC title when they beat bitter rivals Kabras Sugar 17-5 to hoist the Dala Sevens title at the Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium in the Mamboleo area of the lakeside city.
On their journey to the final, KCB had dismantled NSC defending champions Menengai Oilers 14-12 in the quarters before dismissing Strathmore Leos 31-0 in the semi-final.
