Sports ministry: FKF to blame for Harambee Stars woes in Egypt

Football Kenya Federation officials are to blame for the national men’s football team word in Egypt ahead of their AFCON 2021 qualification match against the hosts.

Nick Mwendwa, the FKF boss confirmed to the media that indeed the team risked being kicked out of their Alexandria hotel for failure to pay.

According to Mwendwa, the government has refused to pay for the Harambee Stars accommodation but it has now emerged it’s the federation that has failed to give the ministry of sports the invoice for payment to be done directly by the government.

“They wanted to be given cash but the government told them to provide the invoice so that the payment can be made directly to the hotel,” a source privy to the goings-on at the ministry told Kurunzi.

“As you are aware the government is currently conducting an audit of how the funds given to FKF have been spent and therefore this same federation cannot be given money.

“They are trying to blackmail the government but the PS has remained firm that government will only pay directly to the hotel.”

FKF has been on the spotlight over how KSh244 million they were given for Harambee Stars participation at the AFCON in Egypt in June, Mwendwa accusing PS Kirimi Kaberia of frustrating Federations but Kaberia has maintained they must provide a plausible accountability report before they can receive any further funding.
